چکیده

Observations of comets and asteroids show that the Solar Nebula that spawned our planetary system was rich in water and organic molecules. Bombardment brought these organics to the young Earth’s surface, seeding its early chemistry. Unlike asteroids, comets preserve a nearly pristine record of the Solar Nebula composition. The presence of cyanides in comets, including 0.01% of methyl cyanide (CH3CN) with respect to water, is of special interest because of the importance of C-N bonds for abiotic amino acid synthesis. Comet-like compositions of simple and complex volatiles are found in protostars, and can be readily explained by a combination of gas-phase chemistry to form e.g. HCN and an active ice-phase chemistry on grain surfaces that advances complexity. Simple volatiles, including water and HCN, have been detected previously in Solar Nebula analogues – protoplanetary disks around young stars – indicating that they survive disk formation or are reformed in situ. It has been hitherto unclear whether the same holds for more complex organic molecules outside of the Solar Nebula, since recent observations show a dramatic change in the chemistry at the boundary

Cometary Volatiles and the Origin of Comets

We describe recent results on the CO/C02/H20 composition of comets and compare these with models of the protoplanetary disk. We argue that the cometary observations require reactions on grain surfaces to convert CO to CO2 and also require formation between the CO and CO2 snow lines. This then requires very early mixing of cometesimals in the protoplanetary disk analogous to the mixing described...

Ethyl alcohol and sugar in comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy)

The presence of numerous complex organic molecules (COMs; defined as those containing six or more atoms) around protostars shows that star formation is accompanied by an increase of molecular complexity. These COMs may be part of the material from which planetesimals and, ultimately, planets formed. Comets represent some of the oldest and most primitive material in the solar system, including i...

Subsolidus Transformation of Amorphous Interstellar Dusts after Injection in a Protoplanetary Disk

Introduction: Infrared observations indicate that a dominant fraction of the condensed matter found in the interstellar medium (ISM) is amorphous (silicates, organic matter, ices). On the other hand, similar spectroscopic studies show that silicates are mainly crystalline in protoplanetary disks [1]. Furthermore, cometary material appears also essentially crystalline [2, 3]. Because the ISM dus...

SPITZER/MIPS 24 μm DETECTION OF PHOTOEVAPORATING PROTOPLANETARY DISKS

We present 24 μm images of three protoplanetary disks being photoevaporated around high mass O type stars. These objects have “cometary” structure where the dust pulled away from the disk by the photoevaporating flow is forced away from the O star by photon pressure on the dust and heating and ionization of the gas. Models of the 24 μm and 8 μm brightness profiles agree with this hypothesis. Th...

On the Crystallinity of Silicate Dust in the Interstellar Medium

An accurate knowledge of the mineralogy (chemical composition and crystal structure) of the silicate dust in the interstellar medium (ISM) is crucial for understanding its origin in evolved stars, the physical and chemical processing in the ISM, and its subsequent incorporation into protostellar nebulae, protoplanetary disks and cometary nuclei where it is subjected to further processing. While...
